It’s Christmas Time Again

by Brendan Mahon

It’s Christmas time again
On Grafton Street

Watching the people go up and down,
Always in a rush.

Me, huddled in a doorway—my home,
Box at my side,
My faithful dog Juno nearby,
Covered by a blanket and long coat.

Why am I here, you may ask.
Drink and drugs got me,
Lost it all,
Including my wife and kid,
And my well-paying job.

But please, as you pass me by,
Do not stare or scowl.
Just a smile will do.
Give something if you wish—
If not, no offence caused.

Your blue Hermès bag looks good,
As I spy a lady go by
Out of Brown Thomas,
Next to my doorway.

Like Aqualung the tramp,
She does not notice me.

And so this is Christmas,
And what have we done.

Thank God for Brother Kevin’s Kitchen—
A hot meal and a wash,
As the big day approaches.

Merry Christmas to all.
