Karl Marx claimed that religion is the opium of the people
Whether devout or atheist, one can’t deny it rounds up the sheeple
Propitiate the masses, pilot the directionless soul
Pacify the poor and placate the occasional arsehole
Richard Dawkins professed that religion is the root of all evil
but that’s not the case even if it has caused a lot of upheaveal
It’s not inherently bad fundamentally speaking
It’s set with good intentions that just might need some tweaking
Contrary to claims that religion is to blame for conflict and hate
it is people, not Gods, that conquer, divide and decide our fate
Killing in the name of – a human excuse for despicable crimes
For terror and violence we still have with us – even in these Godless times
Deity didn’t design religion to covet the soul
Humans abused it in a bid to gain control
Its a ploy for power, wealth and authority,
a game of succession, manipulation and supremacy
After all, who can say buddhists are right and hindus are wrong?
Who can say who should win in an Christian vs Muslim ding dong?
But one thing we know is when fear darkens your door,
you may say a little prayer to Allah, Yaweh or The Creator
to keep you safe and guide you through,
believing in something is opium for you.
