The Christmas Carol

by Monica Martin

It’s the most wonderful time of the year:- Christmas.

Families all over the world prepare for the great day, the wishful expectations of children and adults alike.

Jill was preparing for Christmas, herself and her husband Bill and three children. One snowy day Jill was making her Christmas shopping list of all the ingredients she would need to make Christmas cake, Pudding, and mince pies. Then there was the gift list for hubby and children. She thought she might buy some jewelry for Jane and for Paddy and Niall new football jerseys and socks.

She considered what she might get for her husband. You see, Bill is an alcoholic, he finds Christmas time really hard. In the past, bill would binge drink. It has spoiled some precious memories with the children.

As she was thinking about this, she passed a man on the street; who was inviting people to come in to a meeting about Alcoholic’s Anonymous. Jill Stopped to chat to him.
She told him about her husband’s problem and she said I would love to have another nice Christmas.

So Fred the AA man told her to ask Bill to come down to the next meeting on Friday and she should accompany him.

So on Friday they both went to the meeting and there was a few other couples there. All trying to help each other with their problems.

So Fred had a little question and answer session which lasted five minutes, try and ask each other questions that will react a positive outcome like:- would you like happier times with your family?

Jill’s question was How are we going to survive this Christmas?

Just as Jill said this, another girl Angie thought of a solution. Angie suggested that why don’t all families spend Christmas day together, no drink, we can all bring a different dish and soft drinks. Joe liked that idea.

Jill wondered where they have the dinner? Fred suggested the AA meeting room, which as equipped with a full kitchen with oven and microwave.

Bill was very happy and they all enjoyed the day. They all sat around Christmas evening singing Christmas carols.

It reminded him of Christmas long ago, when he was in a choir singing the same Christmas carols.
