The Sunset Years

by Brendan Mahon

I see them walk

And stroll slowly

Up and down the promenade

Of Puerto Del Carmen

The elderly couples

Shuffle along in pairs

Slowly and lovingly

With matching rings on their fingers

Some now in wheelchairs

Being pushed by their loved ones

Some on mobility scooters

Their youthful years

Well behind them now

But still, they gaze

At each other lovingly

Holding hands

Like in their youth

Or early courting days

In sickness and in health

All the days of their lives

Till death do they part

As the sun sets on Lanzarote

Love conquers all
