And God asked:
Where were you when my children were murdered?
Where were you when they cried until they were numbed
To the loss of their mothers, fathers and families?
You turned away believing that you were
Under protection, you watched and said nothing,
You hid behind your wealth, your power and your walls
So that you could ignore what you refused to see.
And some will reply:
Why should we care, we look after our own,
And what difference does it make? We all die
In the end. We do what we can to survive,
We live and let live, die and let die.
And God said:
How foolish of you to believe such a lie.
You have forgotten that it was I who created all things,
Including justice and compassion, but you chose to live
In denial thinking it would protect you from feeling
The pain and suffering of my children.
And God said:
Look now where you are. You stand in front of me
And you believed that there was no life beyond the place
You were before you died and returned to me.
But, I am merciful, for those children and those whom
You neglected and ignored, whose sufferings and deaths
You thought you had escaped, are now with me.
And the Hell I have created for you is to return
To you the hearts I gave you and which you
Hardened but must feel now and for eternity
What you refused to feel for my children.
And God said,
You may have ignored and forgotten,
But I, you God, never forget.
