Christmas Memories

by Brendan Mahon

It’s the simple things

That make us tick

Memories of Christmas past

Childhood dream

Not the presents really

More the experiences

The excitement of Christmas Eve

Dad home from the Post Office

Extremely tired

But glad to see us

So happy

Time off at last at last

Mum in the kitchen

Busy with all the prep

Salthill at Christmas

A glow of white

This was the best Christmas

Ad I was five Christmases of age

Years later, my own family

Christmas Eve so tired

Home at 5am at last

A night call

The boys awake

Oh, its Santa they think

Such a memory

This was the simplest best Christmas

And I was thirty-five Christmases of age

Now its coming on Christmas again

And they’re chopping down trees

And the memories I cherish remain
