The Long Goodbye

by Jacqui Wiley

Tears rolled down my face as I whispered, “Goodbye Daddy, I love you forever.” Placing one foot in front of the other with a heavy heart I recollect on being his Mum yesterday, his sister today as I leave the nursing home.

He gives me little windows into his childhood on sunny days, more memories that he hadn’t shared before and that I hadn’t known, treasured within.

“Hello Daddy, how are you today?” He survived another night, more treasured time to spend together.

Whispering repeated words, “Goodbye Daddy, I love you forever.” Again, the tears roll.

Everyday a last goodbye.
