Freya’s Christmas Rainbow

by Jacqui Wiley

Dear Santy,

I’ll leave out tasty treats for you and your reindeer if you come to my house. I just want one present this year, a rainbow.

Thank you

Love Freya

Age 4 and over a half

Daddy and Mammy had helped Freya write her letter, dotting the letters so Freya could join them together. They were puzzled.

“A cuddly rainbow?” Daddy asked.

“No, a real one in the sky with all the colours Ga-ga said, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet. He helped me learn them,” she said, looking for her crayons to draw the rainbow for Santy.

“Santy, might not be able to switch on the rainbow, especially if it’s a snowy day,” Mammy said.

“He will, he’s magic.” Freya wanted a rainbow in the sky Christmas day and nothing was changing her mind.

Freya told her toys she missed Ga-ga. He was in hospital for such a long time. “Two whole sleeps” she told Dolly P, her favourite Teddy with her beautiful coat of many colours. Dolly P knew Freya was sad, her right shoulder was still damp from Freya’s tears last night. “What if he’s not home for Christmas,” she said, “I’ll miss his Christmas cuddles and I’ll have no one to hide my sprouts.”

Christmas morning came and Ga-ga was not home. Freya didn’t look under the tree. She looked out the window for her rainbow. It wasn’t there. Daddy asked her to open the present Santy left. It was a lovely fluffy bear with a rainbow on its tummy.

“Company for Dolly P, they will be great friends,” Daddy said.

Freya gave Teddy a hug and cuddled back into Dolly P sadly.

The front door opened and Freya looked up to see her Ga-ga. She ran to him and hugged his legs, “Ga-ga,” she squealed, “Santy got my letter, he brought my rainbow. Ga-ga I was so sad it was raining for you, I asked Santy for a rainbow. You told me rainbows come after the rain. Ga-ga you’re home, you’re my rainbow.”

Freya’s Grandad sat down and took Freya in his arms. “My little Freya, you’re my sunshine and my rainbow all in one. I’m so glad to be home with you.”

Freya’s small arms clung tightly to him; her heart full of joy. Christmas cuddles with Ga-ga were the best. She pointed over at Dolly P and the rainbow bear lying together on the couch. “Ga-ga, I think Santy sent the rainbow teddy to tell me you would be home.”

Ga-ga smiled and kissed the top of her head. “Of course, he did, Santy knows everything.”

Mammy and Daddy watched from the doorway “Ga-ga’s better because of you, Freya,” Mammy smiled, “You’re his pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.”

Freya looked up at her Ga-ga with a big smile. “I love you, Ga-ga. I missed you so much.”

“I love you too, I missed you more.”

Freya climbed off her Grandad’s lap and ran over to pick up Dolly P and her rainbow teddy, he lifted her back up on her return.

“Look Ga-ga, my new teddy has all the colours the rainbow has, I’m going to call him Ray Bo.”

“What a lovely name, Dolly P looks happy to have a new friend.”

Freya hugged her teddies, resting her head on Grandad’s chest, his big arm wrapped around them.

A golden light beamed in the window, “Ga-ga! Look!” Freya said excitedly. “A rainbow! This is the best Christmas, it’s magic.”

Looking out at the magical rainbow, Freya whispered, “Thank you, Santy, for making my wish come true.”
