The Last Letter You Sent

by Mary Egan Campbell

Your words were heaven sent
When they came
Illuminating my world
Like sunshine after rain

Eloquently penned yet
With a wealth of love inside
I heard the music in your lyrics
I felt the love between the lines

Each picture you painted there
Imprinted in my heart
Took me on journeys with you
Following the same star

As if I too saw those faces
People and places you had seen
Rich scents of market stalls
Each new taste shared with me

So poetic your word craft
But there was longing in your tone
Your tales of wonder a façade
An elaborate magic show

Amazing tales so perfected
Yet drawn with slight of hand
To distract the reader from your loneliness
How you missed your home land

And though I prayed for your return
Those words I couldn’t write
I never wished to clip your wings
To curb your pathway through life

But now dark clouds have gathered
My throat constricting with regret
Fat tears fall and smudge the ink
Across the last letter you sent

There will be no more story telling
No more writing to do
Your voice reaching out from the page
My last physical link with you
