Cry

by Mary Egan Campbell

The hungry baby’s cry
A welcome sound in many homes
A call to action, primeval
That every mother knows
But when malnutrition dries her milk
Crouching behind the rubble
The fear her baby’s cry invokes
Is the least of her troubles
No soft bed to rest her baby in
No shelter from the cold
No strength left to run away
And nowhere safe to go
Weak and weary, painful limbs
Searching for water and food to live
Her cries weaker than her baby’s
Begging far away strangers to give
Because her nation has abandoned her
Male relatives, neighbours gone
Most dead or dying in the dust
Her homeland has become
All in the name of revenge and greed
A war she didn’t provoke
Targeting the innocent, the weak
Anonymous faces through the smoke
Victims of a greater plan
To rid her people from this place
Ruthless maiming of the vulnerable
Monsters determined to erase
There is no justice or God in this
Atrocities your prophets spoke out against
They were activists for peace and love
So none of this makes sense
Unfairly you call our anger anti-Semitism
To hide your greater goal
To scare us into standing back
While you butcher young and old
Your Tanakh won’t forgive genocide
Your people will take the flak
Don’t use religion as a shield
Babies and children can’t fight back
Tears and blood will scar this land
Known as Dante’s Inferno for evermore
Where little babies are sacrificed
Simply to even up a score
We hear them crying on our screens
Their torture haunts our dreams
And when you turn our aid away
We can’t block out their screams

But I know we can come together
Someday soon somehow
We will rise up and defeat your tyranny
We will weed your despots out
But I am standing on a foreign shore
So many thousand miles away
Feeling so terribly helpless
With nothing I can do but pray
Pray for all of Jewish faith
Tarred by this unjust and racist act of war
Pray for the world’s eyes to open up
See despicable deeds for what they are
Can you not hear the wailing mothers
Watching their precious babies die
What sort of evil men are you
To ignore a starving baby’s cry
